EU concerns over German DSO auction

October 13, 2009

EU Commissioner Viviane Reding has written to Germany’s federal network agency citing concerns over the way the country is set to hold the biggest digital frequency auction. Reding has written to Matthias Kurth, head of Germany’s federal network agency, urging him to rethink the rules of the auction. Brussels is concerned about the way the licences for the 800 Megahertz spectrum will be auctioned, saying the way they are allocated could represent discrimination.

The sale marks the biggest auction since the allocation of UMTS licences in 2000 and centres around licences for spectrum that will be freed up in the switchover from analogue to digital terrestrial television.
