Canvas: ‘roll up’

August 12, 2010

The Project Canvas partners have issued a formal invitation for expressions of interest from CE makers to develop and bring Canvas devices to market in 2011.

Consumer manufacturers have until August 25 to come forward in process Canvas says “will enable the joint venture to rapidly engage new device partners and develop a broad base of manufacturers supporting Canvas – with the ambition to extend its current programme.”

Project Canvas director, Richard Halton said, “Canvas is stepping up its engagement with industry as we get closer to releasing the final set of technical documents to the DTG this month, and launching a consumer product next year.

Bringing on board further consumer equipment manufacturers will ensure people have the widest possible choice of devices and we remain focused on supporting the industry to stimulate a competitive market. We continue to work closely with the DTG to develop common standards for Connected TV”.

Ultimately Canvas will choose makers they will designate as Device Partners a list that, Canvas says, “will reflect the resources that are available within the Project Canvas programme and engineering teams.”
Canvas has been criticised for not sharing enough information with the CE sector. It also subject to a formal anti-competition complaint to Ofcom from Virgin which alleges it will exact control over the market through mandatory technical and ‘look and feel’ specifications.
