Grass Valley Technology sends home the Oscars at the 83rd Academy Awards

March 3, 2011

High-definition technology from Grass Valley once again played a starring role in the live broadcast and the numerous complementary activities surrounding the 83rd Academy Awards telecast on February 27th on the ABC Television Network in the US. In fact, Grass Valley has supported the Oscar ceremonies every year for the past several years.

Veteran production company NEP Broadcasting, based in Pittsburgh, Penn., had a total of five HD-capable production trucks on site at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, Calf., each dedicated to a specific part of the world famous telecast, and each with Grass Valley HD cameras, switchers, servers, and/or routing equipment on board.

NEP’s “Denali Summit” handled the main Oscar telecast, using a Grass Valley Kalypso HD video production switcher, several K2 media servers, and a large Trinix NXT router.

The NEP “SS25” truck helped capture the festivities of the “Oscars Red Carpet Live” show for ABC, which aired just prior to the awards show. The truck carries a Kalypso and more than a dozen LDK 8000 HD cameras.

Also on the line-up was “Denali Silver”, which was used to produce the main International Oscar broadcast feed, which also houses a Kalypso HD switcher and a Trinix NXT router.

The other two production trucks (SSNB4 and SS20) were utilised by media organisations covering the red carpet arrivals with live telecasts from the site.
