Ericsson has been selected by Spanish cable operator R to provide a solution that gives its subscribers the freedom to access on-demand content for the first time. R’s new VOD service allows consumers to view a wide variety of movies and TV programmes on request from a catalogue of thousands of hours of content.

“Consumer behavior is changing; our customers want to be able to find their favorite content and watch it whenever they want. This prompted us to look for an end-to-end VOD solution to enable us to enter the VOD market with a compelling offering that meets our customers’ needs,” said Antonio Rodríguez del Corral, R Business Development Director. “The new user interface developed in this project blends real time, VOD and catch-up content, providing an impressive renewal of our pay-tv service. Ericsson and its partners for user interface have delivered a flexible solution that allows us to provide a personalised television experience and greater consumer choice.”

The solution, which includes the Open Stream Digital Services Platform by Ericsson, delivers a real time video streaming service that fully exploits the latest developments in time shift and traditional VOD technology. R also selected the Ericsson Xport producer and Ericsson Edge QAMs as part of a package that gives consumers greater control and allows them to play, pause and rewind standard definition and HD content.

“Consumers increasingly demand a more individual television experience from their service operator, so when R was looking for an industry leading VOD solution, Ericsson was the obvious choice. Rcustomers are now able to easily find the content they want and have the flexibility to watch it in their own time,” said Staffan Pehrson, Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “Providing R with this VOD solution means that it is now able to build better relationships with customers, expand on-demand services revenue while minimising the deployment costs.”
