New DTH players for Argentina

June 15, 2011

Argentina is allowing new DTH, cable and IPTV entrants to offer pay-TV services. Colsecor, a co-operative of some 270 small cable TV operators, is looking to expand into DTH, for example.

Colsecor says it is applying to Argentina’s Federal Authority of Audiovisual Communication Services for a DTH licence. Colsecor is already talking to Uruguay’s STDC.TV (which is itself backed by Uruguay’s Canal 10) about an agreement to bring a package of channels to its proposed service.

Argentina currently limits ‘foreign’ investment in such services at 30 per cent.

Argentina’s Federación de Cooperativas Telefónicas del Sur (Federation of South Telephone Cooperatives) has also expressed its intentions of supplying a DTH service, and has closed an agreement with Media Networks (Telefónica) to be provided a wholesale solution.
