Digital Plus closes down PPV sports

August 23, 2011

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Spanish pay-TV platform Digital Plus has put an end to its pay-per-view live sports offer and has increased instead the number of football matches broadcast on its premium channel Canal Plus to 22 matches per season from 16.

The platform has also launched a new channel, Canal Plus Liga 2, with four football matches each weekend. Live league matches include those of the top two clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid and it will also air international matches on both Canal Plus Liga channels, including the Bundesliga and the Dutch Eredivisie. In total, Canal Plus is to offer eight league games, two every weekend for €16.95 per month in contrast to the previous €13.99 per match on Digital Plus.

The move is in reaction to the decline of purchases of ppv events following the launch of pay DTT channel Gol TV which intensified competition in the market. In parallel Prisa TV, owner and operator of Digital Plus, has reached an agreement with Telefonica to make its premium channel Canal Plus available to all Imagenio’s IPTV subscribers. Prisa TV aims to consolidate its recent strategy of digital multi-distribution across all platforms on the Spanish market.
