Alcatel-Lucent upgrades Sky broadband

January 10, 2012

Alcatel-Lucent and Sky have successfully deployed a100G high-speed optical transmission network, which they claim is the first in the UK – helping Sky meet the ever-increasing demand for higher-quality and cost-efficient broadband and video services.

For the deployment, Alcatel-Lucent has provided Sky with its 100G next generation optical coherent technology, which takes advantage of unique Bell Labs silicon innovations to support data speeds of 100 gigabits-per-second on each of the 88 wavelengths of an optical fibre. This represents a significant boost in network capacity and performance.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G solution is designed to address operators’ need to deliver more and more bandwidth while keeping costs in check. Because it can be deployed on its existing optical infrastructure, Sky is able to support 100G capacity through a relatively simple, quick and cost effective in-service network upgrade.
