Italian DTH operator Sky Italia is set to launch its new Internet-based service Sky On Demand on July 1st, after a period of tests with a limited number of subscribers.

Initially, Sky On Demand should be available to a wide range of customers, before being expanded to the entire subscriber base by November.

Sky On Demand will be a “progressive download” service – once selected by the user, the content is downloaded on the hard disk of MySkyHD. As soon as acceptable percentage is available, it is possible to view the content, leaving the download to proceed in the background. The catalogue is already available in “push VoD” mode.

Similar VOD services have already been launched by all the major Italian broadcasters: RAI has Rai.tv and Rai Replay; Mediaset has the Video Mediaset portal (free content) and Premium Play (pay-TV content); while Telecom Italia Media has La7.tv and La7 on Demand.
