Oprah’s OWN to be profitable next year

August 2, 2012

It seems only a few months back that Oprah Winfrey was having to take all manner of difficult decisions to ensure her Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) stayed on air, let alone be profitable.

Now, helped by its partnership with Discovery Communications, and Discovery’s clout with cable MSOs (and no doubt a slice of cost cutting at OWN) it seems that OWN could be into breakeven by the end of next year.

Comments from Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav during an analyst’s conference call said that OWN had enjoyed a 14 per cent uplift in ratings in Q1 this year, and a further 20 percent in Q2 and as far as the current quarter is concerned audience numbers are up more than 50 per cent year-on-year.
