Netflix reveals House of Cards premiere

October 5, 2012

Having outbid cable channels HBO and AMC for the rights to the show, reportedly paying about $4 million per episode, Internet subscription streaming service Netflix has revealed that drama series House of Cards – based on the 1990 BBC miniseries of the same name – will be available for members to watch instantly beginning on 1st February 2013.

All 13 first-season episodes will be available at series launch to Netflix members in territories where Netflix is available – the UK, Ireland, North America, Latin America and in the Nordic countries – compared with the traditional network TV basis of offering new shows weekly.

The initiative marks Netflix’s first foray into original programming as it seeks to differentiate its service from other online video providers, as well as reducing its reliance on Hollywood studio content.
