Brightcove ranked top Online Video Platform/CDN

November 13, 2012

A competitive assessment by analyst firm ABI Research looking at the impact on over-the-top (OTT) and multiscreen video distribution for premium video has placed Brightcove at the head of its rankings.

Online Video Platforms (OVPs) and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are ranked according to their implementation skills and innovation. Implementation skills include market share, geographies and pay-TV businesses served, as well as support for live and VOD video. Innovation scores look at the platform’s ability to integrate with existing systems, ability to serve all types of devices, and other features to meet changing consumer video behaviours.

In the OVP and CDN ranking, Brightcove was followed by Ooyala and Akamai. Ooyala narrowly beat Brightcove on innovation, with Kaltura in third. On implementation skills, Brightcove was followed by Akamai and then Ooyala. Akamai’s positioning – ranking second in implementation but lacking innovation is characteristic of the business model difference between CDNs and OVPs. Other components of this Competitive Assessment look at the Managed Video Platforms (MVPs) and Content Management Systems (CMS) markets.

“Online Video Platforms (OVPs) and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have different roles in the video ecosystem,” according to Sam Rosen, practice director for TV & video at ABI Research. “OVPs are a more comprehensive offering including content management system and advertising solutions, while CDNs are focused more on delivery. However, both classes of competitors compete while re-selling each other’s products. OVPs, once thought of as serving only smaller enterprises, are having success in TV Everywhere with content owners not used to delivering video directly to consumers,” he advised.
