Brazil’s 8K carnival for NHK

February 8, 2013

By Chris Forrester

This weekend is Carnival in Rio, as well as in many other countries in the build-up to ‘Fat Tuesday’ (Mardi Gras) events around the world. TV has the Rio de Janeiro event well covered with TV Globo and Japan’s NHK using around 150 technicians to cover the event.

The signals are also being streamed on a dedicated YouTube channel and by Brazil’s Terra TV and broadband system.

YouTube says that owners of ‘Smart TV’s will be able to stream their signals, as well as view on smart-phones, laptops and PCs – although with Portuguese commentary.

NHK has confirmed that they will have 8K cameras capturing the event. As last year, the idea is to create showcase content with 8K/Ultra-HDTV, which NHK will broadcast in Japan and Globo share in broadcasting’s major trade shows, like NAB 2013 and IBC.
