Spain’s broadband market gains momentum

Fixed bandwidth market is growing fast with the addition of 416,000 lines, up 3.7 per cent, to a total of 11.56 million in 2012, according to the latest report from the Telecomunications Market Commission (CMT).

Telefonica remains the market leader with a market share of 48.33 per cent, followed by its telco competitors, 32.96 per cent and cable operators with 18.71 per cent. In December Telefonica gained 42,780 lines in comparison with 10,080 captured by its telco competitors. Telefonica is also leading the development of FTTH in Spain operating 323,285 lines, 97 per cent of all FTTH connections in the country.

The company is extending its FTTH network throughout Spain and has just started the deployment in Valladolid, in the region of Castilla Leon that will also see a LTE pilot for 4G over 800 MHz.
