The latest half-yearly report from Uruguay’s Communications Regulator (URSEC) says that as at December 31st the country had 592,699 pay-TV subscribers. It is generally acknowledged that by now that number would have exceeded 600,000 homes. During the second half of last year the pay-TV market grew by 31,431 net new subscribers.

As far as individual suppliers are concerned, Cablevision (Clarin) have a 15 per cent penetration rate (with 59,099 subs viewing via its Bersabel subsidiary, and 17,088 viewing via Space Energy Tech., and 14,285 on Aufomar). DTH broadcaster DirecTV have a 14 per cent penetration with 81,912 subs

Two new players have recently entered the market. Claro/America Movil received an authorisation in February to start DTH services, while Moviestar says it will enter the market and compete with DirecTV and Claro.
