RTL acquires Videoland

August 7, 2013

Toy-StoryRTL Netherlands has bought Dutch VoD service Videoland as it seeks to and take on Netflix in the Dutch market.

RTL Netherlands has purchased 65 per cent of Videoland’s parent firm The Entertainment Group (TEG), with RTL Netherlands CEO Bert Habets commenting that the deal was a “logical next step in the development of our on-demand TV offering.”  TEG will continue to operate independently and RTL said it would use the Videoland service to help it launch a subscription service this autumn.

Arno Otto, managing director, digital for RTL Netherlands, confirmed that the subscription offering would give users unlimited access to international and Dutch movies and series for a fixed monthly fee.

Netflix revealed in June that it plans launch in the Dutch market before the end of the year.
