Arqiva builds “superhighway” with Virgin fibre

Arqiva, the communications infrastructure and media services company, has completed the build of a “data superhighway” with a new fibre network from Virgin Media Business. The network connects up to 40 sites across the UK, providing a superfast delivery service for its broadcast and mobile customers.

Arqiva provides much of the infrastructure behind television, radio, satellite and wireless communications in the UK working with customers including major broadcasters, such as the BBC, ITV, BSkyB, the independent radio groups, major telco providers and the emergency services.

The dedicated Arqnet2 network can transmit data bundles of up to 16 terabytes at superfast speeds. With more capacity in place, Arqiva could launch a new TV channel for its customers without concern over the demands it would place on the network.

George Wareing, sales director, mobile & broadcast, Virgin Media Business said: “We live in an ever-connected world, where people expect their digital demands to be met. The rise in TV catch-up services like ‘+1’ plus the demand for HD and 3D TV content mean media operators need networks that won’t buckle under the pressure of too much data being pushed through the pipes. By helping Arqiva to meet this explosive demand for capacity and compete in this data-driven market, we’re ensuring that media operators can deliver a world-class service at superfast speeds.”
