Malaysia’s Astro tops 3.4m subs

In their latest numbers (to the end of October) Malaysia’s Astro pay-TV operator added a net 382,000 subscribers taking the total to 3.402 million (up 6 per cent) which means Astro’s total subscriber base (when the free-to-air NJOI subs are added) to 3.78 million or 54 per cent of Malaysia’s TV households.

The number of customers on Astro B.yond increased by 235,000 to 2.71million (Q2): 2.47million), representing 80 percent (Q2: 74 per cent) of total Pay TV customers.

1.61million customers are enjoying Astro channels in HD clarity (Q2: 1.52 million), 468,000 are able to record their favourite shows with PVRs (Q2: 414,000), 289,000 are Multi-room customers (Q2: 268,000), 857,000 are using Astro Superpack (Q2: 823,000) and 152,000 have taken up Astro Valuepack (Q2 107,000).

Revenue for the nine months increased 13 percent to RM3.5 billion ($1 billion). Astro chief executive, Rohana Rozhan, said 80 percent – 2.71 million – of subscribers had already migrated to the Astro B.yond platform. “The Astro B.yond platform sets the stage for us to launch value added products and services, as well as to deliver content via OTT and IP,” she said.
