New Year’s Day sets iPlayer record

Dr-WhoThe BBC has reported it received 102 million iPlayer requests for TV and radio programmes between December 21st and January 1st, with 80 million for TV and 22 million for radio.

This is a 32 per cent year-on-year rise, although the BBC has measured one extra day this year compared to 2012.

New Year’s Day proved to be the most popular day ever for the iPlayer, setting a new record of 11 million programme requests, (which excludes iPlayer data from Virgin Media customers, which is not yet available).

The iPlayer mobile and tablet apps was downloaded 941,000 times over the festivities – adding to the 20 million app downloads iPlayer reached in October.

For the second year running, Doctor Who was the most in-demand iPlayer show over the festive period – with 1.96 million requests.
