Internet TV streaming service Aereo plans to launch its technology in the Greater Cincinnati region on January 21st. Greater Cincinnati includes 24-county area across Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
In January 2013, Aereo said that it intended to expand to 22 new US cities beyond its New York initial launch during the course of the year, but fell short of that target, counting New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Salt Lake City, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit and Baltimore as its initial launch markets.
Aereo’s announcement follows the company’s confirmation January 7 of an additional infusion of $34 million of funding. Aereo will announce additional launch dates for its expansion cities throughout 2014.
“Aereo is growing and we’re thrilled that our expansion has brought us to the Greater Cincinnati region and three new states: Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana,” said Aereo CEO and Founder Chet Kanojia. “Aereo’s cloud-based antenna/DVR technology brings the old-fashioned antenna into the 21st Century, providing consumers access to the over-the-air broadcast signals that belong to them. It’s a simple and modern way to use an antenna to watch television – the way it should be. We’re committed to providing best-in-class technology and customer service to our users and we’re excited to introduce Aereo to Greater Cincinnati.”
Aereo’s technology works on ‘smart’ devices from tablets to phones to laptop computers. Aereo is currently supported on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch. The Aereo app for Android (currently in beta) is available for download for devices running Android operating system version 4.1 or higher. Aereo is also supported on Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Opera, AppleTV (via airplay) and Roku platforms.
