India: 243 channels waiting for licences

February 10, 2014

Following up on our February 7th story that there were now 786 channels on air in India, it has emerged that India’s Ministry of Broadcasting & Information is processing another 243 channels, which are in various stages of clearance ahead of formal licences to broadcast being granted.

However, it seems to be a painfully slow process. Only 11 channels have been authorised in the past year (since January 2013), and four of those were issued with their licences since January 1st.

India’s Minister of broadcasting says the new applicants are at various stages of clearance in conjunction with various departments and ministries.
