weatherUS satellite broadcasting giant DirecTV has finally dumped Atlanta-based Weather Channel, and contracted WeatherNation. The Weather Channel has been blacked out on DirecTV for some weeks.

Colorado-based WeatherNation is the alternate service. WeatherNation was launched in 2011 although it succeeds Weather Cast which for a brief period also replaced Weather Channel while the broadcaster was in a not similar carriage dispute with Dish Network.

WeatherNation has been available on DirecTV since just before Christmas when it was given channel 361, just one click along from Weather Channel. It now occupies both 360 and 361 channel spots.

Weather Channel was formed in 1980 and originally owned by Landmark Communications, and bought by a consortium led by NBC-Universal in 2008.
