First global 4K football transmission

bale-footballOn March 23rd, Mediapro will make the first global broadcast using 4K in the Spanish Liga game between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid will be filmed in 4K ahead of La Liga becoming the first league in the world to undertake regular 4K production from the 2014-15 season.

Before the end of the current campaign, Mediapro plans to provide a 4K signal for other matches, offering fans an image quality four times greater than HD, with over eight million pixels of resolution.

Two cameras integrated within the 4K system will allow broadcasters to capture enhanced details of Sunday’s game using a ‘Super Zoom’ system, giving viewers a chance to experience augmented reality view of match events.

Mediapro will also provide its clients with highlights from the match in 4K and plans to upload highlights from different matches to the La Liga channel on video-sharing platform YouTube.

“The introduction of this new standard of resolution underscores Mediapro’s commitment to spearhead developments in digital television and to offer viewers the utmost in picture resolution. This step represents a global project by Mediapro designed to bolster broadcast quality which will be formalised in the Spanish BBVA Liga next season”, said the company in a statement.
