América Móvil, DirecTV prosper in LatAm

July 14, 2014

Pay-TV groups América Móvil and DirecTV continue to add subscribers in Latin America and to stand apart from the rest. According to Dataxis’s statistics, both companies -together- reached 40.5 per cent of market share in the first quarter and exceeded 40.3 per cent in the previous period.

The two companies increased their base by more than 300,000 users in the quarter. América Móvil recorded 13.92 million customers thanks to the 15 operations they have in the region, while DirecTV reached 11.92 million with their 14 operations.

Dataxis’ Senior Analyst Juan Pablo Conti explained: “The same inertia generated by the dominant groups of the Latin American Pay TV market makes their respective market shares to become bigger, sometimes even to the point of overlapping each other. So much so that AT&T, the future new owner of DirecTV Latin America (in case the proposed operation is approved in the US), must get rid of the stock options in the other of these two regional mega operators (América Móvil) in order to avoid both groups to incur in crossed media property”.

Televisa Group appears in the third place of the ranking, with 8.21 million subscribers. It is followed by Cablevisión with 3.47 million, Telefónica with 2.84 million and MVS Comunicaciones (Dish Mexico) with 2.48 million. These four groups have a joint market share of 26.7%.
