Telefonica adds ‘smart home’ services

September 4, 2014

Telefonica is enhancing its convergent offers with new packages to be launched later this year that will include 5 or 6 services; TV, broadband and fixed and mobile telephony – with the addition of home security services (home alarms), home automation and video games in the cloud.

The Spanish telco will also strengthen its TV offer with the launch of a new VoD service on Movistar TV and a new series TV channel that will allow subscribers to watch a just-released TV series one day after its premiere in the States.

Telefonica is speeding up its plans to strengthen its convergent packages in an attempt to get a better position in the market to face tough competition from its main rival Vodafone-Ono. Ono is launching convergent offers with discounts of up to 30 per cent.

Meantime, Orange is seeking to acquire other telcos to gain mass in the market, with Yoigo and Jazztel as the most likely candidates. Orange has recently revamped its TV service but it is finding it difficult to reach its target of 150,000 new subscribers this year.
