ICASA must review adult TV

South Africa’s media regulator ICASA has been ordered by a Western Cape High Court judge to look again at its decision to permit Johannesburg-based On Digital Media (which traded as TopTV, and is now being managed by Star Times Group) to transmit adult channels supplied by Playboy TV.

Judge Lee Bozalek ruled that the ICASA decision, made more than a year ago, be set aside. The three channels, Playboy TV, Desire TV and Brazzers, were granted their licences in April 2013.

The original ICASA decision was hugely controversial and various lobby groups have argued that the regulator erred in making its decision.

The ruling means that transmissions must cease said local lawyers.
