Digital Production Partnership releases 3 new guides

The Digital Production Partnership (DPP) has announced the publication of three new guides to help the television industry.

·     10 Things You Need To Know About Connectivity: a guide to better connectivity as digital media replaces videotape

·     10 Things You Need To Know About Ultra High Definition: a guide to the new high-resolution TV format

·     Home Truths No.1: Reaching Nirvana – over IP: a report from the first DPP AT HOME event, which brought thirty industry professionals together to look at the claims being made for IP-based production and broadcast

These three publications are available now for download for by DPP Members from the DPP website.

The three reports are the first to be published since April 1st, when the DPP became a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee: Digital Production Partnership. This new work has benefited from drawing on the expertise and experience of the DPP’s new membership base.

DPP Managing Director Mark Harrison said: “The DPP’s mission is to help the broadcasting industry by easing the transition to digital workflows. These three publications show the quality of the industry-wide expertise that the DPP can pull together. They will be an invaluable resource for our Members – and are also a concrete demonstration of the value of DPP Membership.”

10 Things You Need To Know About Connectivity is an introductory guide to what it means for those working in TV to transport file-based media. It is the result of research undertaken by the DPP among its Membership and is designed particularly for those who find connectivity services difficult to understand. By harnessing cross-industry experience and expertise, the guide provides the information required to understand the basics of connectivity and the kinds of services companies might require.

10 Things You Need To Know About Ultra High Definition is designed to help DPP Members understand what UHD is and what they need to think about when making decisions regarding this new format. It explains UHD1, why you might use it and how it could make a difference to audiences. It covers UHD in acquisition, post production and delivery. It also covers the various changes that make up a UHD picture and the audio that goes with it.

The third report announced today was produced out of the first DPP AT HOME event on 13 July. DPP AT HOME is an invitation-only event held every 2-3 months. Its purpose is to bring together 30 or so DPP Members to discuss a single topic in a comfortable and informal setting. Collectively, these events will contribute to the direction of future DPP workstreams.

The first event, which was sponsored by Endava, covered Internet Protocol technologies and the claim that an IP-based broadcast industry will enable greater business and technology flexibility.

The report, Home Truths No.1: Reaching Nirvana – over IP, concludes there’s an urgent need for the DPP to help bring a common understanding of IP and its role in production and broadcasting. There needs to be a ‘maturity index’ of the various technologies and a guide to the cost drivers and potential benefits. Perhaps the key issue, however, is the cultural gap that needs to be closed between a people-based industry and a machine-based technology opportunity.

The DPP will produce further, in depth, reports on Connectivity and UHD later in the year. DPP AT HOME meanwhile will gradually build a series of Home Truths reports which will reflect the thinking of the DPP’s membership, and help shape the DPP’s future work.
