Final Top Gear boosts iPlayer requests

August 13, 2015

The BBC’s iPlayer service saw 250 million TV and radio requests in July 2015 – up 2 per cent on June despite the summer weather which the corporation points out often affects TV viewing.

Mobiles and tablets saw strong increases (+9 per cent and +7 per cent on June respectively).

TV requests were at 196 million in July, up 1 per cent on June (and up 18 per cent on July 2014) and viewing across the 4 screens was fairly stable month-on-month.

The swan-song episode of Top Gear proved a big hit on the catch-up service. It originally aired on June 28th, drawing 1.5 million viewing requests for the calendar month despite only being available for 2 days. The episode continued to do considerable business in July, notching up another 1.04 million viewing requests (the second most requested show behind an episode of Eastenders).
