Netflix movie bombs at box office

October 19, 2015

beastsNetflix movie Beasts of No Nation, has debuted poorly at the US box office, although the SVoD giant claims it is pleased with the movie’s streaming performance.

The film, starring Idris Elba and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, launched on Netflix on October 17th and also had a limited theatrical release in indie cinemas across the US. It recouped just over $50,000 of its $12 million budget across 31 cinemas.

Netflix would not comment publicly on the film’s streaming results, as is its policy with all content, but was reportedly “very happy” with its SVoD performance.

The theatrical release means the movie is eligible for Oscar and other award consideration. Critically the film was well received, and currently holds a 90 per cent aggregated rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
