Netflix Russia imminent?

January 4, 2016

Netflix plans to launch its streaming service in Russia in 2016. Russian newspaper Izvestia reports that the company could begin operations in the country within a matter of weeks, making its services available to over 142 million consumers there.

Izvestia further reports that Netflix and Russia’s leading long-distance telephony provider, Rostelecom, have entered into an agreement regarding TV set-top boxes, whilst comments from LG Electronics smart TV manager Vitaliy Svistunov hint at the service also being available on LG smart TVs.

“We hope that there will be more licensed content in Russia, and with the advent of Netflix people will start to get used to the consumer subscription model,” Svistunov said in an interview.

SVoD would be something new for the Russian market, but experts believe it will change the viewing habits of the nation as it offers superior quality in terms of service and content.
