Japan is buying 4K/Ultra HD televisions at an impressive rate. Last year saw some 1.17 million sets bought, while 2016 is expected to see around 3.3 million UHD sets installed.

But adoption is forecast (by Mitsubishi Research) to grow rapidly from 2017 onwards. Next year the data suggests that 6.8 million sets will be installed. The following year, 2018, will see UHD installed sets almost double to more than 12 million units as broadcast services expand.

Japan will host the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 and in the build-up to the Olympics, sales of UHD sets will boom. The research says that 2019 will see almost 19 million sets installed, and 26.3 million displays in homes by 2020.

Thereafter, sales will further accelerate as ‘conventional’ HD sets disappear from the market. 2021 will see 33.6 million UHD sets installed, and 40.2 million installed units by 2022.
