Multichoice ups Kenya subs price 8.5%

June 14, 2016

By Chris Forrester

Multichoice Kenya’s GOtv subsidiary is raising its subscriber fee by 8.5 per cent. Both tiers are affected. GOtv Lite subscribers see their monthly fee rise from Kenyan Shillings 599 to 650, and the premium tier GOtv Plus is upped from KES 849 to 920 (about €8).

The price hikes are not unexpected. Multichoice has been raising subs prices in most of its markets. South Africa saw a similar price rise in April.

The problem for Multichoice/DStv is that they are buying most of their international programming in US dollars or British pounds, and almost all African currencies have fallen badly against the US dollar and other international currencies.  South Africa’s Rand tumbled 29 per cent in the year to April.

However, arch-rival StarTimes Media has left its subscription prices intact, and has publicly ruled out a price rise at this time.
