2.85bn will stream Rio Olympics

August 3, 2016

eMarketer estimates that 2.85 billion people worldwide will stream the Rio Olympics this summer, about 1.5 times more than for the 2012 London Olympics.

In the US, eMarketer estimates 320 million people will stream the Rio games, (almost double the number who streamed the 2012 games), whilst in the UK, eMarketer estimates 160 million people will stream the Rio games (about 1.5 times the number who streamed the 2012 games).

Paul Verna, senior analyst, eMarketer, commented: “While the previous Olympic Games in Sochi and London featured massive amounts of live coverage on digital platforms, broadcasters are going further this year, raising the total streaming hours and focusing on mobile, connected TV, social media, even virtual reality. This increase highlights the growing importance of live sports streaming as a channel for advertisers to monetise.”
