March 2, 2017

Netflix has confirmed that it is to co-produce three new series with the BBC and Canal+, according to a report in French business newspaper Les Echos.

Netflix will reportedly co-produce The Spy with Canal+, and Troy: Fall of a City and Black Earth Rising with the BBC.

Netflix invested $1.8 billion into licensed, original and co-productions in Europe since 2012 and will continue to spend on new shows in 2017, according to investment bank Exane/BNP-Paribas.

Les Echos
also mentions Netflix’s drive to see its access software added to European telco’s set top boxes with recent partnerships announced with Orange, Vodafone, Liberty Global and Telenor and others.

Netflix is also in discussions with the European Commission which is willing to submit SVoD operators to the same programming obligation as broadcasters. Netflix could be obliged to have at least 20 per cent of European programmes in its catalogue, and the same could apply to the homepage display.
