Digisoft.tv has announced the release and general availability of a disruptive new casting solution, Playmigo. This new SAAS and technology platform enables OTT video providers to cast their content to almost any connected TV device on the market today without the need to develop and deploy TV apps.
With television experience quickly transitioning into both 4K and HDR, it’s fair to say that video content is well and truly at home on the big screen. However, this new opportunity also introduces challenges for brands that are trying to plan the optimal roadmap strategy for TV platform investment.
Commenting at the launch of Playmigo, Technology, Media & Telecoms analyst Ben Keen observed: “One of the biggest challenges facing the exploding number of OTT video services being launched around the world is the increasingly fragmented array of connected devices owned by consumers. Multi-platform casting promises a simple, easy and flexible way for service providers to deliver their content to the key devices that their customers want to use.”
Playmigo addresses the fragmentation and App Store submission challenges that exist today which limit the number of platforms that any given OTT service can address.
Playmigo is launching with support for Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Samsung Tizen Smart TV and Amazon Fire TV. More devices including game consoles and connected speakers will be added to the service on an on-going basis, without the need to update code on already deployed mobile apps.
Remarking on the inspiration behind Playmigo, Digisoft.tv CTO John Casey explains: “Digisoft has spent many years in the industry, observing the creation of numerous multiscreen platforms, frameworks and bespoke implementations, none of which appear to have solved the problem of cost and maintainability. We see the emergence of the mobile-centric casting model as both an opportunity to innovate in user interaction AND enable a radical reduction in cost and timelines. We believe that Playmigo is the answer for OTT providers who want a big screen solution but don’t want the pain and cost that goes with it.”
The Playmigo team worked closely with early adopter middleware and multiscreen development partners to validate the use cases and business benefits that Playmigo affords. This collaboration also directly identified new technical applications for the unique technology underpinning Playmigo including Home Gateway content redistribution and custom cast receivers for operator grade Set Top Boxes.
OTT video service providers can finally maximise their investment in premium content by delivering to every screen whilst avoiding the overheads of custom development and maintenance for every connected consumer device.
