Qatar ultimatum: “Close Al Jazeera”

June 23, 2017

By Chris Forrester

Qatar has been given a 10-day ultimatum to close news channel Al Jazeera as part of a series of demands from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the other Gulf states.

Kuwait, which is not involved in the dispute and is acting as middle man, delivered a list of demands to Qatar which include: Close the news channel, sever all its links to Iran and its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, to close a Turkish military base in Qatar and to pay ‘compensation’ to Saudi Arabia.

The demands also call for Qatar to close the Al Jazeera affiliates, which is taken to mean its English and other language channels.

Qatar, via Al Jazeera, says it will not negotiate until Saudi Arabia lifts its blockade on the country.
