Game of Thrones S7 smashes HBO viewing record

Game of Thrones, perhaps unsurprisingly, pulled in record viewing numbers for HBO in the US on Sunday night. Some 16.1 million HBO subscribers watched the first episode of season 7 – the show’s penultimate season – with 10.1 million of those viewing traditionally and the rest coming from DVR and streaming. That puts the audience number at 50 per cent greater than the Season 6 premiere.

The episode, entitiled Dragonstone, also became HBO’s most-watched season premiere for any of its series to date, and also set the record for the highest number of concurrent viewers on its streaming platforms HBO Go and HBO Now. It was the most-tweeted-about episode in the show’s history, attracting 2.4 million tweets.
