Star Wars TV series for Disney SVoD service

November 10, 2017

Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Disney’s currently unnamed streaming service, set to launch in 2019, will feature a new live-action TV series set in the Star Wars universe.

Iger also revealed plans to develop TV spin-offs for Monsters Inc and High School Musical as well as more shows within the Marvel universe.

Disney will pull all of its content from Netflix and other streaming platforms in due course to make all its content exclusive to its own service.

Speaking at an earnings call, Iger refused to comment on rumors that the company is planning to purchase the film and TV divisions of 20th Century Fox but did say that Disney was “always looking to add to the number of film franchises” it currently owns.

“We look forward to launching our first direct-to-consumer streaming service […] and we will continue to invest for the future and take the smart risks required to deliver shareholder value,” Iger said.
