OTT TV platforms are becoming increasingly popular in Spain with four in every ten Spaniards watching streamed content via a TV set at least once a week, according to the CNMC (The National Commission on Markets and Competition).

Netflix has more than doubled its subscriber count in the last 6 months to 1,163,000, up from 540,000, whilst HBO has attained 414,000 subscribers since launching just 6 months ago.

Telefónica’s OTT platform Movistar+ en Dispositivos is the market leader with over 2 million subscribers, present in some 12.6 per cent of all Spanish households.

Amazon Prime Video is also growing, now being viewed in 1.1 per cent of Spanish households. Combined, these OTT platforms are rapidly growing with 22.5 per cent of Internet-connected homes subscribing to them up from 12 per cent six months ago.

Spaniards are also watching free OTT platforms. YouTube is the most popular with 58 per cent of users who watch online content using the service, followed by Atresplayer, owned by Atresmedia with 42 per cent, Rtve.es with 33 per cent and Mitele.es, operated by Mediaset, with 29 per cent.
