Ultra-HDTV on WRC agenda

January 25, 2012

By Chris Forrester

The World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-12) has opened in Geneva, gathering 3,000 experts together from more than 150 nations to debate a wide range of treaty-level topics. It meets for the next three weeks until February 17th. Tarek Al Awadhi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was appointed chairman of the conference.

High on the agenda is finding spectrum and frequencies for new services including mobile and other benefits that flow from the digital dividend. This especially concerns Ultra HDTV, which is being pushed by Japanese delegates as representing the next move for broadcasters. Japan intends starting test transmissions around 2020, and will be using Ka-band frequencies for its satellite transmissions.
