India’s public broadcaster Doordarshan is to add guest channels to its existing 59 channel line-up. Doordarshan Direct, its DTH platform, will carry 75 channels by the end of the year. Doordarshan has 22 of its own channels in the existing mix.
India’s broadcasting minister S Jagathrakshkan said that the extra channels represent the first stage of a wider – and long-awaited – expansion that has been promised for some time. At one stage 150 channels were promised by December 2011.
The government is keen on the expansion plan as a means of raising cash from would-be broadcasters.
