Tiscali TV over in Italy

January 2, 2009

Tiscali TV IPTV service will cease at the end of the year. The company has told subscribers the December fee be waived. The company has struggled to attract more than 50,000 subs since it failed to strike a pay-TV deal with Sky Italia. Instead it offered themed channels and 'personalised' or self-scheduled TV. The network will stop carrying the Italian Digital TV channels in mid-January. No reasons for the closure were given but as the third entrant and without compelling pay channels the service was not viable. The closure must throw further doubt on the future of the UK operation – a sale process to BSkyB stalled just before Xmas on price.
