In 2009, there were no stereoscopic 3D TV sets on the market. By 2015, there will be over 78 million sold, according to a report from iSuppli. The analyst predicts that 4.2 million 3D sets will be sold this year.
However, although iSuppli is bullish on 3D sales, it notes that the standard has several obstacles to overcome. For example, Blu-ray players will fragment the market with some that can support 3D output and some that can’t. Second is the issue of content standards. “Although consumers will expect quality similar to the blockbuster movie Avatar, achieving an equivalent immersive experience will depend on content availability, among other factors,” it said.
There is certain to be a lot of confusion among consumers who must first buy the right kind of TV, then 3D glasses and hardware that can playback 3D content. Even with all that, iSuppli expects that 78 million 3D TVs will have been sold by 2015.
