BT to gauge fibre demand

October 4, 2010

BT is launching a nationwide survey dubbed ‘Race to Infinity’ to see how much potential demand there is for optical fibre broadband.  BT claims that this will identify “hot spots” where the demand for fibre is high. BT will have brought fibre broadband within reach of four million premises by the end of 2010, but it wants to connect to 12 million more households.

A BT spokesman said that by participating in the survey, communities will have the opportunity to make their voices heard as the company decides where else to deploy the technology.

BT said in May that, subject to there being an acceptable environment for investment, it would spend £2.5 billion (E2.87bn) on rolling out fibre broadband to two-thirds of UK premises by 2015.
