Hungary now has 1.45 million digital TV subscribers, up 26,000 in January alone, according to data from its National Media and Telecommunications Authority.

There are twelve TV suppliers of one form or another which between them control more than 80 per cent of the market. Cable giant UPC is market leader with a market share of 29 per cent at the end of January, unchanged from a month earlier, Magyar Telekom’s share was also unchanged at 25 per cent, while the share of DIGI rose to 26.1 per cent from 25.9 per cent.

The overall number of their digital subscribers with cable or IPTV connections rose by 14,000 to 571,000 during the month. The number with satellite DTH subscriptions grew 12,000 to 879,000.

A little more than three million Hungarian households are pay television subscribers. About 800,000 households still watch either analogue, digital or satellite television content for which broadcasters do not charge. Subscriptions at the twelve service providers totalled 2.681 million at the end of January.
