EchoStar Europe has supplied a new HD, satellite STB to Telefónica in Chile. The new product will enable consumers to access an array of digital television services including HD channels.

The cost effective, twin-tuner HDS-600 ships with software that enables the consumer to upgrade to digital video recording (DVR) using an external USB hard disk drive – features include one touch recording, live pause and watching one channel whilst recording another. The digital services are accessed through a state-of-the-art HD graphical user interface (GUI).

“We are delighted to announce the launch of a new STB for the South American market”, commented Rhod Williams, General Manager, EchoStar Europe. “The product has been designed in close collaboration with Telefónica to ensure that it strikes a delicate balance between being cost effective and feature-rich – this unit allows an operator to enhance its service portfolio cost effectively by offering the consumer a field upgrade to DVR using a standard, off-the-shelf USB hard disk drive”.

The new field-upgradable STB will enable Telefónica to grow its Movistar service portfolio in Chile following the launch of its satellite pay TV platform in 2006.

“We are very pleased to be able to market this new product to our consumers”, commented Sebastian Edgar Slelatt, TV Director, Telefónica Chile. “It is imperative that we continue to offer a cost effective service coupled with state-of-the-the art features and this upgradeable STB will help us to maintain our strong pay TV market position within the Chilean territory”.

Shipments of the HDS-600 have already commenced.
