July 19, 2011

Digital free-to-air (FTA) channels have overtaken pay TV in Australian metropolitan audience share, with the June figures showing FTA digital’s 20.25 per cent to pay’s 15.42 per cent.

Digital FTA channels nudged past pay TV for the first time in January with a 20.04 per cent metro audience share, compared to pay TV’s 18.87 per cent, between 6pm and midnight, according to OzTam.

Freeview chief executive Robin Parkes said: “This is an outstanding endorsement of Freeview by the Australian viewing public, and very firm evidence they agree that there’s no need to pay for TV. Australian audiences have wholeheartedly embraced the 10 new digital multichannels we have launched under three years since Freeview started operating.”

The top five FTA digital channels in terms of audience share in June are 7Two with 3.8 per cent, Go! with 3.4 per cent, Eleven with 2.8 per cent, 7Mate with 2.7 per cent and Gem with 2.2 per cent, according to OzTam.
