May 8, 2012

By Chris Forrester

Telenor Broadcast, a subsidiary of Norwegian telco giant Telenor, reported an “all time high” EBITDA for its first-quarter trading. CEO Patrik Hofbauer said his division had enjoyed a strong quarter-year with positive developments in all parts of the division.

Specifically he referred to a 39 per cent increase in encryption specialists Conax “driven by higher ARPU and cost-saving measures”, while despite flat revenues on its Canal Digital DTH division (and a fall of 11,000 in DTH subscribers during Q1) its EBITDA margin grew from 12.9 percent (for the previous quarter) to 14.7 per cent for Q1. Y-o-y the increase went from 10.4 per cent to 14.7 per cent. Looking at Telenor’s 4 Nordic DTH territories (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark) the y-o-y losses, however, were significant with subscriber numbers falling from 986,000 to 954,000 over the course of the year to March 31.

As for Telenor’s satellite broadcasting division, its y-o-y revenue increase grew from Norwegian Kroner 239 million to 250 million. EBITDA improved from 65 per cent to 71 per cent.
