Latino pay-TV combine to fight piracy

January 28, 2013

A new alliance has been formed to fight pay-TV piracy throughout Latin America. Alianza is due to present its new campaign this week and its members have agreed to link together to combat signal and content piracy, as well as to educate the public and make viewers more aware of the damage that piracy does.

Alianza has some powerful players in its membership list, including pan-regional trade association ABTA, DirecTV PanAmericana, Discovery, Disney & ESPN Media Networks Latin America, Fox International Channels, Globosat, HBO, Nagra, Sky Brasil, Telecine Programação de Filmes Ltda, Telefónica, Televisa, Turner, VTR and Win Sports. Some of the founding members, such as DirecTV and Nagra, have been working and conducting research on the subject for the past two years.

Last year a study suggested that there were at least 11.4 million homes viewing pirated TV signals in Latin America. The true number, says Alianza is probably far more.
