Global demand for cable STBs staying healthy

July 25, 2013

Worldwide digital cable set-top box unit shipments increased by 10 per cent in 2012 and are expected to continue to increase modestly in 2013, according to MRG research. This market continued to be led by Motorola (now part of Arris) who shipped more than 11 million units in 2012.

Satellite STBs continue to show strength as new providers continue to launch in regions like Eastern Europe, Latin America and the MEA. Worldwide unit shipments reached nearly 109 million in 2012, up from about 100 million in 2011. In 2013, MRG is projecting that satellite set-top box unit shipments will continue to rise slightly and long-term demand for satellite set-top boxes is expected to remain strong. Technicolor ranked number one in this market globally in 2012.

While demand for IP STBs continued solidly in 2012, MRG expects unit shipments to flatten out and even marginally decrease as the IPTV market matures in 2013 and 2014. Revenues likewise will fizzle a bit as ASPs drop too quickly for unit shipments to make up ground. This segment has a lot going on under the surface of these total trends. Huawei was the segment leader in 2012.
