Telefonica and ONO feel the squeeze

July 26, 2013

From David Del Valle in Madrid

The new face and brand of Telefonica’s IPTV service, Movistar TV, has yet to bear fruit as the company continues to lose clients. Movistar TV lost 27,000 subscribers (to June end) with its total pay-TV base declining by 20 per cent a year-on-year.

Meanwhile, ONO lost €19.44 million in the first half of the year against a profit of €44.78 million the same period last year. The company is relying on its TiVo service to give a boost to its TV subscriptions. Its TiVo service reached over 210,000 clients by the end of June, representing 25 per cent of its total pay-TV subscribers.
